Our continuing care of the cemetery

We are proud of our historic grounds and special cemetery spaces.

The team at Brighton General Cemetery work around the year to keep our grounds in pristine condition. The team consists of 4 outdoor employees, who cover horticulture, grave-digging and general maintenance.

Managing our gardens

The team at Brighton General Cemetery take care of 12 hectares, which feature numerous varieties of rose, trees and shrubs, which make up both formal and informal style gardens. Our grounds provide an ideal environment for a variety of wildlife including birds and reptiles.

Recycling and water

At Brighton General Cemetery we are dedicated to recycling and green technologies.

All our organic waste is recycled on-site and reused within the cemetery for garden bed preparation. All prunings and felled trees are chipped and used as mulch.

Extensive water storage facilities mean we can take full advantage of inclement weather.

All our water features use recycled water, and this water is also used for wash-down requirements and supplements toilet flushing.

Our water quality management plan with Melbourne Water includes gross pollution traps, which ensures that all run-offs into the bay are of excellent quality.

Potable water is only used in our amenities, facilities and cemetery taps.

Specialist employees

We have a close relationship with TAFE for in-house and external horticultural training, which ensures our horticulture employees are specialists.

Over the past 10 years, six SMCT staff have received a total of eights awards including Outstanding Apprentice of the Year at their level, and the much coveted award of "Outstanding Student of the Year Holmesglen Parks and Gardens”.

Recreation

We are proud that our grounds are used extensively for community recreation. On any given day you may find walking and historical groups enjoying the environment.

Your responsibilities

All public cemetery land is crown land. This means that when you purchase a grave or memorial location you are not purchasing the land, but purchasing rights to inter on crown land.

It is you and your family’s responsibility to maintain the monument, headstone or plaque in perpetuity while the cemetery is responsible for maintaining the grounds

Tenure on Cremation Memorials

All cremation memorials at Brighton General Cemetery are purchased in perpetuity – for all time.
